Most medical gas systems include pressure gauges, reserve indicators, or alarm panels that alert you when cylinders are low or empty. Signs can include:

  • Low-pressure readings on the regulator or manifold

  • A cylinder gauge reading near zero

For portable cylinders, checking the PSI gauge is the quickest method. Oxygen cylinders gradually lose pressure as they empty, while nitrous oxide cylinders may maintain pressure until most liquid nitrous has been used, then drop quickly near empty.

A blinking high-pressure nitrous alarm usually means the system has detected abnormal pressure conditions. Common causes include:

  • The tank is almost empty and about to switch over
  • A regulator malfunction
